Australia's Health Crisis
Statistics sound a warning
Each year, 75% of Australians experience some form of lifestyle-related disease. Consider these statistics: 1 in 4 Australians die prematurely of cancer; 2 in 4 die of heart disease; 59% of Australians are taking anti-depressants; 50% of adults are overweight and 1 in 5 are obese; obese men are 33% more likely to die of cancer; and obese women are at 50% greater risk of getting breast cancer.
While Australia's national health system threatens to fall apart under the strain of this expanding need for its services, dissatisfaction is growing among the public who are upset over lack of accessibility to health care, its rising costs and the current medical focus on disease and symptoms rather than the whole person. Consequently, there is a strong swing to integrated health care.
